earth.

Lately, I've been thinking, obsessing, dreaming and breathing about global warming, the ozone layer; simply put, our earth. I have made a lot of changes in the way I view and appreciate this planet I live on. Which, in turn has made me want to make more changes at home. So far, suggestions have been ignored so, I will have to make these things happen on my own. For example: composting which will decrease our 4 garbage bags a week, to one medium sized garbage bag. We already recycle and our city has recently started picking up recycling. Seeing all the blue bins around the city is a big step. Alberta's been behind with recycling programs, so, it was great to see it finally happen! Anyways, I would like to stay alive for as long as possible. I want to see my children's, children. And hopefully, their children. Great grandma sounds fantastic to me. This thought of course brings me back to our planet;and, this world we live in. How can we be so selfish? When we all have to do is start making drastic changes. Not in the near or distant future. NOW. We've been warned and told and taught. But, what do we do in return? Hear but we don't really listen. Remember Ferngully? A 1996 or 1997 movie, I'm not quite sure. I was 7 and this disney movie was telling us about deforestation and its effects. Disney!!! that was over a decade ago and now the lessons and the out comes have only progressed negatively. I want my children's children to live in a clean, healthy environment. Full of the animals I grew up with, without the word "endangered" or "extinct" next to them. I find it so appalling how we take everything for granted; how can we be so selfish? It's disgusting. The United States for example: they DO NOT recycle. One of the largest countries, with a vastly growing population, does not recycle. When my parents came back from Las Vegas and told me, I was mortified. LAS VEGAS of all places. Seriously, it's depressing. An example of global warming is happening right now in Calgary, AB. Snow in May. Most likely even June. Yeah, you say its just Calgary because we've always had fluctuating weather. Think about it, mid June it begins to warm up and it will stay decently warm until mid December. Everything is in reverse and it shouldn't be. I know, I'm not an environmentalist major or anything along those lines. But I cannot help venting. It's difficult to see. And to know that this will effect not only me but generations to come is heartbreaking.
Another example : An Inconvenient  Truth; Say whatever you want, but as soon as I saw this video I was smitten. Another example: Planet Earth. It's simple: those DVD's illustrate where we live and how beautiful it is. And in some circumstances because of global warming, it's unfathomable to witness. (ex: the polar bear). Finally, the last and most recent example is Avatar. As cheesy as it sounds, there is an enormous "moral of the story" in that movie.
